Press Release_OCFAContest – The Winners (MS Word)
Here are the “30 drops” out of the bucket – winners of our contest. We received 146 valid contest entries. The highest level of debt was $89,321, and the cut-off threshold was $42,652. The total debt from all contest entries adds up to $4,475, 132. OCFA congratulates all the students on the substantial investment they have made in their futures!
The list of contest winners was posted until Oct 27, 2016. It has now been removed to honor privacy of these people. Thank you for your participation.
The applications have been reviewed and we are in the process of contacting the winners. Some people still need to supply the exact loan document to satisfy our financial auditors. But here is the news you really want … the highest level of student debt was $89,321 and the threshold/cutoff was in the vicinity of $43,000. Those who still owe student debt above $43,000 have a very good chance of being a winner of the contest. We hope to announce the final winners by March 11. Stay tuned for the next announcement: And The Winners are …. !
The Okanagan College Faculty Association (OCFA) is sponsoring this contest through union dues paid by 302 members, in collaboration with our provincial affiliate the Federation of Post Secondary Educators (FPSE).
Our union wishes to bring attention to the REAL WORLD EFFECTS OF THE BC LIBERALS CONTINUAL REDUCTION OF FUNDING TO OUR INSTITUTION AND OUR SECTOR, ONE OF WHICH IS THE RISING level of student debt PLACED ON STUDENTS in the Okanagan/Shuswap region.

The 30 students with the highest level of debt will each receive $1000 … thus 30 drops will be taken out of the ‘bucket of student debt’ that currently exists in our province.
The winners will be announced by March 1, 2016, and a spreadsheet will be published that gives a debt total for all who entered the contest (see application form for the details about the information to be published online).
Our provincial affiliate, FPSE, has been trying to ‘open the doors’ to discuss funding for the post-secondary sector. Want to know more? … check out this link: advocacy for the post secondary sector in BC
